Needles and leaf litter landing on a roof do not simply sit there. They hold moisture against the shingle, and damp shingle is where algae establishes, which is why roofs under tree cover streak years earlier than roofs on open lots. Litter also collects in valleys and behind chimneys where it stays wet more or less permanently.
Roofs are a soft wash surface. Pressure strips the mineral granules that protect the shingle from UV, which shortens roof life measurably and voids most manufacturer warranties. Coarse grit in the gutters after a wash is the sign that has happened, and there is no way to put granules back.
Vinyl panels overlap so water sheds down the outside face. Spraying upward into those laps forces water behind the siding into the wall cavity, where it sits against sheathing and insulation with no way to dry. Nothing looks wrong from outside, and it surfaces much later as a musty smell or a soft patch of sheathing that nobody connects to a wash years earlier. Rinsing downward avoids it entirely, which is why method matters more than equipment here.
