How to Clean Stucco Without Damaging It

Why stucco needs care

Stucco is a cement-based render applied over lath and a moisture barrier. The surface is porous, which is why it holds organic growth so readily, and it is comparatively brittle, which is why pressure damages it. A jet that a concrete drive shrugs off will erode the texture, open hairline cracks into real ones, and blow out any area that has already lost its bond with the substrate.

The bigger risk is water intrusion. Stucco is designed to shed water and let the assembly behind it dry. Driving water into a crack or up under a trim edge puts it behind the barrier where it cannot dry, and that leads to rot in the framing rather than a cosmetic problem on the wall.

Inspect before you wash

Walk the wall first and look for hairline cracking, especially around window and door corners where movement concentrates. Tap suspicious areas: a hollow sound means the stucco has debonded and will come away if hit with pressure. Check where the stucco meets trim, windows, and the roofline, and note any gaps. Washing a wall with open cracks pushes water straight into them, so those want sealing first.

The method

Stucco is a soft wash surface. A cleaning solution kills the algae and mildew rooted in the porous surface, gets dwell time, and is rinsed at low pressure. Because stucco holds product in its texture, rinsing has to be thorough or residue keeps working after you leave.

Rinse downward, never up under trim or the roofline. Keep the wall evenly wet as you work so one section does not dry while you are on the next, which is what causes visible tide lines on a porous surface.

Stains that need separate handling

Rust bleeding from a fixing or a nail head needs an acidic treatment, and on stucco that has to be tested somewhere inconspicuous first because it can lighten the finish. Efflorescence, the white powdery bloom, is mineral salt migrating out of the render as it dries. It is a moisture symptom, not dirt, and washing brings more of it up unless the moisture source is dealt with. Paint overspray and sealant smears need mechanical removal rather than chemistry.

Painted and coloured stucco

Integrally coloured stucco has no protective topcoat, so aggressive cleaning lightens it unevenly and there is no way to correct that short of painting. Elastomeric coatings tolerate washing better but can be cut through at the edges. Both want the gentlest method that works and a test area first.
