Spray upward into those laps at pressure and water goes behind the siding into the wall cavity, where nothing looks wrong from outside and the consequence shows up much later.
We apply the solution low to high so it does not streak down dry siding, give it time to kill the growth, then rinse high to low with the spray angled down. That keeps water on the outside of the panel where it belongs. Brick and concrete on the same property can take a firmer pass, so the pressure changes surface by surface rather than being set once at the truck.
Vinyl siding works as a rain screen. Panels overlap so water runs down the outside face and the wall behind stays dry, and there is a deliberate gap under each lap for that to happen. This is the single most common way house washing causes real damage, and it is entirely avoidable by rinsing downward.
