Pine needles are the reason Slidell gutters block differently: they knit together into a mat that water runs straight over.
Pine needles are the reason Slidell gutters block differently from the rest of the metro. Leaves break down and wash through eventually. Pine needles knit together into a dense mat that holds its shape, sits in the bottom of the run, and lets water flow straight over the front edge while the gutter looks only half full from the ground.
A needle mat has to come out by hand; flushing pushes it along and jams it into the downspout throat. Gutter guards help with leaves and are close to useless against pine needles, which slip through the mesh and then cannot be reached without taking the guard off. If you have guards and pine cover, expect the guards to come off as part of the job.
Leaves are flat and they break down. Pine needles are long, thin and springy, and they interlock into a dense mat that holds its own shape. Once that mat forms it sits in the bottom of the run like a filter, and water flows across the top of it and straight over the front lip of the gutter. From the ground the gutter looks half full and fine, which is why the problem is usually found by watching it rain rather than by looking.
Flushing makes it worse. Water pushes the mat along the run intact and jams it into the downspout throat, turning a spread-out blockage into a solid plug. It has to be lifted out by hand.
Gutter guards work reasonably well against leaves. Against pine needles they are close to useless, because needles are narrow enough to pass through most mesh and then cannot be reached without removing the guard. Some designs let needles stand upright in the mesh and block the openings while the gutter underneath fills anyway.
If you have guards and pine cover, expect them to come off as part of the job and go back on afterwards. It takes longer than an unguarded gutter, and it is the only way to actually clear one.
