Carpet Cleaning in New Orleans

Carpet in a New Orleans house spends most of the year holding humidity, which is what turns ordinary soil into a smell that vacuuming will not shift. Damp fibre holds onto everything that lands in it, and in older houses with raised floors and limited airflow underneath, that moisture has nowhere to go. The result is carpet that looks acceptable and smells tired.

What we cover

  • Hot water extraction for carpet and rugs
  • Traffic lanes and stair treads
  • Pet odour and spot treatment
  • Upholstery in the same visit

Hot water extraction, and getting it dry again

We clean by hot water extraction: solution injected into the pile, agitated, then pulled back out under vacuum with the soil in it. The part that matters here is the extraction pass. Leaving a carpet over-wet in this climate is how you trade a soiled carpet for a musty one, so we make more dry passes than a drier climate would need and we want air moving in the room afterwards.

Old houses, raised floors, and airflow

A lot of New Orleans housing sits raised, with an open or partly enclosed space underneath. That space is usually damper than the room above it, and the floor between them is not a vapour barrier. Carpet laid over it takes up moisture from below as well as from the air, so it dries more slowly than the same carpet in a slab-built house. When a room smells musty and the carpet looks clean, that is generally what is happening.

It changes the job in one specific way: extraction has to be more thorough, and the room needs air moving through it afterwards. We would rather make extra dry passes and take longer than leave a carpet holding water in a house that will not dry it out quickly.

What we treat separately

Traffic lanes, the strip down a hallway or in front of a sofa, hold ground-in soil that general cleaning passes over. Those get pre-treated and agitated before the main pass. Pet odour is not a carpet problem so much as a pad problem: if urine has gone through into the pad, cleaning the pile improves the look and does very little to the smell, and we will tell you that before starting rather than charge you to find out. Spot stains each need their own chemistry, and we test in an inconspicuous spot on older or wool carpet before applying anything.
